The fire crackled. The three musketeers—Tara, Bopa, and Pao—danced under twin moons that hung like lanterns above the plain.

Tara clapped her hands and began to sing:

Baari barsi khattan geya si, khat ke leyanda pyala,

Bhangra taan sajda, je nache nakhre wala!

Pao answered with a staccato rhythm that matched his wiry dance. Bopa mimicked a wooden marionette, jerking to the beat. Tara’s laughter filled the camp as her Gidha flowed effortlessly—her energy teasing, her movements precise.

With a twirl and wink, she sang again:

Baari barsi khattan geya si, khat ke leyandi chaabi,

Gidha paun laggiyan, munde di bhabhi!

And when the refrain returned, her voice carried into the high still air:

Baari barsi khattan geya si, khat ke leyanda khatt,

Gidhe vich tu nachdi, teri ki gal-baat!

They danced until exhaustion claimed them, collapsing under the breathing stars.

“The sky is so different here in Vega Angstorm,” Tara whispered. “I miss my zodiac signs. I realise I don’t even know what a zodiac really is.”

“The Zodiac,” Bopa said softly, “is a natural phenomenon back on Earth. We’re twenty-five light-years from home now—everything looks unfamiliar. Even the Saptarishi—the Seven Sages—no longer resemble the Great Bear we used to see. In truth, even on Earth the Great Bear was never part of the Zodiac. It’s too far north.”

A star map displaying the Saptarishi (Seven Sages) constellation, Ursa Major, with labeled stars and their associated names, set against a cosmic background.

He unfolded his notebook and showed her a page of ancient names aligned with distant lights.

“These Seven Sages shaped the heavens for Earthbound eyes,” Bopa said. “But here, the pattern dissolves. They drift like notes in a lost chord whose harmony only Earth could hear. The pattern was never in the stars—it was in us.”

Path of ecliptic

He looked upward. “The Sun and the Zodiacal stars, along with Earth and the planets, all seem to move from east to west because Earth rotates west to east. The Sun’s path—the ecliptic—tilts like a wave about the equator, giving us twelve constellations in a year. When you’re born, the Sun hides within one constellation—the one you never see, masked by its light. That’s your sun sign.”

Diagram illustrating the Earth's elliptical orbit around the Sun, labeled with the months December, March, June, and September.

Tara looked thoughtful. “So what we call ‘seeing’ was never actually seeing?”

“Exactly,” said Bopa. “The constellations along this ecliptic are the scenery on the road the Sun, Moon, and planets travel. Because Earth is tilted by 23.5 degrees, the Sun wanders north to the Tropic of Cancer and south to the Tropic of Capricorn. That tilt,” he smiled, “is what gives Earth its seasons.”

He turned serious. “Here, in Angstorm, it is different. In twelve thousand years, Vega itself will align with Earth’s axis—the pole star of another age. But now, Vega is consuming Angstorm. Still, I suspect it’s cyclical. The black singularity near the Syraface might counterbalance the stellar pull.”

Tara frowned. “You mean… this might not be an ending?”

“Not if we act,” Bopa answered quietly.

The eastern horizon brightened with morning light. Pao stretched out, half dreaming. He thought of Leda’s dark rule, of Angstorm’s dying core, and of the new calculations no one had dared to test. There was still hope, he felt—hope grounded in truth, not prophecy.

They fell asleep beneath Vega’s pale blue shimmer.

Bopa found satisfaction.

Tara was consumed by visions of the Zodiac.

And Pao dreamt of freedom.
