Three Temples of Capsaicin: The Odyssey of Controlled Fire

This is the Odyssey. The first article was Iliad. Here the journey continues through riot line, clinic chair, winter kitchen, competitive arena, and the final wages of overindulgence. Same chemistry. Same burn. Different destinations.

To make food edible requires salt, heat, and oil. To make it transcendent requires capsaicin and its cousins. This is physiology.

The Receptors: TRPV1 and TRPA1

Classic taste lives on buds. Spices activate nociceptors on trigeminal C-fibres.

TRPV1: Capsaicin, heat (>42°C), gingerol. Burning on lips/tongue.
TRPA1: Mustard oil, wasabi (allyl isothiocyanate), garlic (allicin), cinnamon (cinnamaldehyde). Stinging in sinuses.

Oil prolongs: lipophilic agonists seep in ghee.

The Triptych + 2: Five Stations of Controlled Fire

Panel One: Riot Line (Coercion)

Minneapolis, 2020. OC spray (10% oleoresin capsicum).
0-30s: Eyes clamp. Lips swell. Bronchoconstriction.
Recovery: 45m saline hoses. Used by US/UK/India police (Bhut Jolokia grenades).

Panel Two: Clinic Chair (Treatment)

NHS neuropathy. 8% Qutenza patch.
15-45m: Visceral fire peaks (pain 7-9/10).
60m: Desensitisation. 42% pain drop, 12 weeks.

Panel Three: Winter Kitchen (Celebration)

Gurugram dusk. Chettinad kara kuzhambu (Mundu chillies, 50k SHU).
Plate two: Endorphins spike 87%. Tamil endurance beats Mexican bravado via daily layering.

Panel Four: Competitive Arena (Spectacle)

Eating Kings:

  • Mike Jack (Canada): 100 Carolina Reapers (1.5M SHU each) in 36m38s; 25 in 4m36s.
  • Greg Foster (USA): 10 Reapers in 33.15s.
Tens of millions SHU as timed sport.

Panel Five: Wages of Overindulgence (Rectum’s Reckoning)

Undigested capsaicin reaches anorectal TRPV1 nociceptors. The odyssey circles back.

ConditionCapsaicin EffectClinical Reality
HealthyBurning sensation during defecation. No tissue damage. Tolerance builds.Common anecdote. 2006 RCT: 50 hemorrhoid patients—no symptom worsening vs placebo.
PilesIrritates inflamed hemorrhoidal veins.Anecdotal aggravation.
FissurePain +85%, burning +160% during passage.RCT confirmed.
FistulaChronic sinus tracts inflamed by chemical irritant.Surgical nightmare.

The Sin Complete: Kitchen sacrament becomes rectal purgatory. Tamil grandmothers warn: “Top fire needs bottom ice.” Daily microdosing builds tolerance even here. Bravado falters.

Odyssey Close

Mexican charges. Tamil endures. Records quantify. Weapons enforce. Kitchen sanctifies. Anus judges.

Capsaicin: sacrament when controlled, sin when excessive. The body tracks every dose from mouth to exit. Survival rehearsed. Overindulgence punished.
